Weds, May 21st, from 6.30 p.m., at the Royal Society of Medicine, 1 Wimpole Street

You are invited to join the launch of the first biography of Dr C Everett Koop, by Biographers’ Club member Nigel Cameron. Dr Koop was the world’s most famous paediatric surgeon before President Reagan made him US Surgeon General in 1981. It was a largely ceremonial post, but Koop turned it into a potent bully pulpit for public health, first cutting smoking in the US by one-quarter, then – despite White House opposition – leading the fight-back against AIDS. Koop went on the play a key role in the ultimately unsuccessful Clinton healthcare reform effort. In his eighties, he chaired the world’s top health website, DrKoop.com.
Dr Koop: The Many Lives of the Surgeon General will be published by the University of Massachusetts Press on 18 April. The launch will take place from 6.30pm, at the Royal Society of Medicine, 1 Wimpole Street. The RSM’s dean of education, Professor Julia Manning, will discuss the book with Professor Cameron; other speakers will include Professor John Wyatt, emeritus professor of neonatal paediatrics at UCL. The think tank BioCentre UK is sponsoring the event, which will end with a drinks reception. There is no charge for participation – please email Nigel Cameron to confirm your attendance.
